This annual report published by the European Commission explores EU education and training systems, and their progress towards achieving the EU-level target. The 2023 edition has a special focus on the teaching profession, zooming in on teacher shortages across the Member States, as well as their various efforts to raise the attractiveness of the profession.

EURASHE ATTENDS COP28 IN DUBAI
Secretary General John Edwards was in UAE last week representing EURASHE at this high-profile international event, bringing together over 80,000 people from 197 countries.
On 2 December, EURASHE hosted the workshop “Higher Education Institutions (HEI) Role in Promoting Local Governance of Climate Neutral and Smart Cities”, which saw the participation of panel speakers from members Vilniaus Kolegija and Metropolia University of Applied Sciences (figure 1).
Panelists discussed the capabilities of higher education institutions in addressing climate challenges through their different missions – research, education and external engagement. The workshop also highlighted the role of higher education institution in urban development, and offers policy recommendations that may be used globally, depending on local context.
After the workshop, John had the honour to meet Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak, former Minister of Higher Education and responsible for establishing the Higher Education system in UAE (figure 2).

ST. PÖLTEN UAS INTERNATIONAL WEEK
Hosted by EURASHE member St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences, this one-week conference brought together stakeholders to co-create ideas and exchange best practices and experiences in the context of the European University Initiative.

IAU INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
This year’s edition of the annual conference of the International Association of Universities (IAU) was hosted by Qatar University in Doha. As a recent member of IAU, EURASHE was represented by Secretary General John Edwards.
EUROPEAN EDUCATION SUMMIT
On 30 November, The European Commission celebrated the Sixth European Education Summit “The European Education Area: A reality for all” in Brussels. During the event, policy-makers and various stakeholders contributed with new perspectives, innovative solutions and creative approaches to help make the European Education Area a reality for all.

REDUCING DISPARITIES IN THE EU
The European Commission is accepting feedback for its 9th Report on economic, social and territorial cohesion, assessing progress in reducing economic, social and regional disparities in the EU and how national and EU policies have helped achieve this. Feedback is accepted until 28 December 2023.

CALL FOR ENTRIES – MEDEA AWARDS ’24 EDITION
The Media & Learning Association’s annual competition to reward the best use of media to support education at all levels is now open for entries! We are looking for entries which demonstrate excellent use of multimedia in a learning setting including videos, audio, simulations, AR/VR/XR apps, podcasts, vlogs, animations, and any other excellent use of educational multimedia.
Entries are welcome from students, teachers, schools, production facilities, universities, training companies, agencies, and anyone else working on the creation and use of educational multimedia. MEDEA Awards 2024 finalists will be invited to take part in the Media & Learning Conference – Back to the Future? organised by the Media & Learning Association and KU Leuven on 20-21 June 2024 in Leuven, Belgium. All finalists’ entries will be featured on the conference agenda, MLA newsletter and the winner will be announced during the Awards Ceremony.
The deadline for receipt of entries is 29 February 2024 – submission is free.

AD TALKS WEBINAR 2024
The ALL DIGITAL team would like to invite you to the first AD Talks webinar of 2024 on Thursday 11 January from 15.00-16.30 with their President, Altheo Valentini.
