A Certificate Program for a Specialised Pediatric Nursing Workforce

The Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University (DHBW) Stuttgart has implemented an innovative certificate programme in collaboration with the pediatric hospital at Klinikum Stuttgart. Designed to provide professionally qualified nurses with a science-based and practice-oriented mastery of acute inpatient pediatric nursing, this initiative ensures that high-level care meets the rigorous demands of modern healthcare environments.

Addressing Critical Healthcare and Educational Challenges

The program was developed to address several critical challenges within the German nursing landscape, including:

  • Mitigating the impact of generalist training following the transition of pediatric nursing education to a generalist model, which decreased the time dedicated to the care of infants and children.
  • Ensuring the quality of specialised care by providing necessary post-qualification for general nursing graduates entering the pediatric field.
  • Navigating the gap between general nursing education and the specialised, evidence-based knowledge required for sick children and adolescents.

Implementation

The “Acute Inpatient Pediatric Nursing” curriculum was established through a working group of experts in pediatric nursing science, education, and practice instruction. The accredited programme is structured into three modules, providing participants with Level 6 European Qualifications Framework (EQF 6) knowledge and ECTS credits that can be applied toward future degree programs:

  • Fundamentals of Pediatric Nursing
  • Nursing Care for Chronically Ill Children
  • Nursing Care for Sick Children in Acute Situations.

Results and Impact

Since its implementation in 2024, the initiative has demonstrated measurable success and strong engagement:

  • High enrolment interest, with 19 participants already completing their first module and a new cohort of 20 participants beginning in October 2025.
  • Enhanced professional skills: participants’ feedback indicated a significant increase in specialised knowledge, clinical skills, and professional reflection.
  • Facilitated career entry, effectively equipping nurses with specialised pediatric knowledge at the start of their professional journey.

Lessons Learned and Transferability

One of the primary findings of this initiative is that the interaction between nursing students and vocational nurses is exceptionally constructive, specifically aiding the transition from theory to practice. While the end-of-module examinations proved challenging for some vocational nurses, the collaborative learning environment was highly valued.

This post-qualification model is highly transferable to other healthcare environments facing similar educational shifts. By providing a structured pathway for specialised upskilling, institutions can ensure that the move toward generalist education does not compromise the quality of specialised pediatric care.
