Peer Learning Activity on Student-Centred Learning

June 2023
University Politehnica of Bucharest, Romania
Face-to-face
The Peer Learning Activity on Student-Centred Learning is being organised by the BFUG Working Group on Learning and Teaching and EURASHE and the University Politehnica of Bucharest, Romania hosts it. The PLA aims to bring together different stakeholders in higher education to share information about the system-level developments, exchange good practices and discuss possible commitments concerning further enhancing the student-centred learning approach at the system level.
Student-centred learning is among the critical elements of higher education in the European Higher Education Area. With the Rome Communiqué, the ministers for higher education adopted the “Recommendations to National Authorities for the Enhancement of Higher Education Learning and Teaching in the EHEA”. They committed to “supporting higher education institutions in further implementing student-centred learning and teaching”. The Recommendations emphasise the goal to make student-centred learning a reality, among others, by creating a supportive environment, in terms of funding and regulation, that enables higher education institutions to tailor education provision to the needs of different types of learners and to build a culture for equity and inclusion.
Moreover, student-centred learning is included among the European Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area in particular in the way that the “institutions should ensure that the programmes are delivered in a way that encourages students to take an active role in creating the learning process and that the assessment of students reflects this approach” (ESG 2015, 1.3) and is also related to standards on learning resources and student support (ESG 2015, 1.6), and teaching staff (ESG 2015, 1.5).
EURASHE is looking for examples of good practices in implementing the student-centred learning approach. The examples should align with the “Recommendations to National Authorities for the Enhancement of Higher Education Learning and Teaching in the EHEA” (ANNEX III to the Rome Communiqué). They should inspire possible ministerial commitments at the system level and have transferrable characteristics, i.e. have the potential to be implemented across the EHEA.
The event is envisaged to be interactive and registration is limited to a smaller number of participants who wish to actively contribute to the ongoing discussion about the topic .
