Leading the Future of Digitalisation Engineering: Lessons from RUN-EU
In a significant step forward for applied research and transnational collaboration, three institutions within the Regional University Network – European University (RUN-EU) have launched a joint PhD programme in Digitalisation Engineering. The initiative is led by EURASHE member Technological University of the Shannon (TUS, Ireland), in partnership with the Polytechnic University of Leiria and the Polytechnic University of Cávado e do Ave, both located in Portugal.
The joint PhD programme was developed to address the growing demand for advanced digital skills across industry and society. It aims to train highly qualified professionals capable of leading innovation in digitalisation engineering, while fostering ethical and environmental awareness. The programme is designed to support Europe’s digital transition and sustainable growth, aligning closely with Smart Specialisation Strategies in the participating regions.
Students enrolled in the programme gain expertise in cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, cyber-physical systems, robotics, and intelligent energy systems. The curriculum is structured to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and international engagement, preparing graduates to tackle complex challenges in industrial and service sectors.
This initiative contributes to several key thematic areas:
- Skills development;
- Research and innovation;
- Regional impact;
- Internationalisation.
The programme was formally established following a Memorandum of Agreement signed by the presidents of TUS, IPL, and IPCA in 2023. It is supported by a robust network of over 20 industry and research partners, including the Instituto De Telecomunicações, INESC, IBEC, and EUREC. These collaborations ensure that students have access to relevant facilities, mentorship, and real-world research opportunities.
The programme is the first of its kind to grant PhD-awarding powers to Universities of Applied Sciences in Portugal, marking a major milestone in the evolution of doctoral education in Europe. It also represents the first joint doctoral degree within the RUN-EU alliance.
By 2029, the programme is expected to reach over 100 cumulative registrations, with increasing demand anticipated as promotional efforts expand and micro-credential offerings grow. The dual funding model—combining industry contributions and public support—has already secured funding for the first 30 learners, demonstrating the financial viability and attractiveness of the initiative.
