The University of Helsinki reorganised its quality assurance system between 2004 and 2007. The build-up process and some of the challenges are described in this paper. The Finnish Higher Education Evaluation Council (FINHEEC) will audit the quality assurance systems of all Finnish higher education institutions (HEIs) by the end of 2011. The quality assurance system of the University of Helsinki was audited in autumn 2007. The objective of FINHEEC audits is to ensure that HEIs have a quality assurance system that supports continuous improvement. Careful preparation for the audit process produced a positive result and the audit was certificated in February 2008.
