    Profiling Professional Higher Education

    The aim of the seminar is realization of cooperation between higher education
    institutions in the region, representation of the educational systems of the countries and
    mutual participation in European programs of support of higher education.

    The topics for the seminar are the following:

    1. Representation of the educational systems of the countries: The number and structure of higher education institutions in the educational system; The number of students; The legal framework of professional higher education; The system for quality assurance in higher education; Specific important issues;
    2. Possibilities for cooperation of higher education institutions in the region: Possible areas for cooperation of mutual interest; Exchange of best practice; Mutual involvement in associations (EURASHE, UAS-net etc.); Participation in European programs of support of higher education; Mobility of students and teachers.

    The seminar on regional cooperation ‘Profiling Professional Higher Education’ was organised by the Conference of Academies of Applied Studies Serbia under the patronage of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia and EURASHE (European Association of Institutions in Higher Education). The Conference of Academies of Applied Studies Serbia (CAASS) is a member of EURASHE. The Conference became member in 2012 and has been an active participant of all the important events organised by EURASHE ever since. The seminar was chaired by Ružica Stanković, Ph.D., President of the Conference of Academies of Applied Studies Serbia who emphasized the importance of regional cooperation in development and profiling of professional higher education.

    The seminar was opened by the Minister of Education, Science and Technological Development Srđan Verbić, Ph.D., who mentioned that he expected real examples of private-public partnerships to appear primarily in schools of applied studies. He added that after a few decades of development of applied studies, international activities have been intensified in this area so that actions in Serbia could be more visible. “We are here to help primarily in making a better legal framework for your actions. Every example of best practice of yours is for us another idea of what should be changed in the Law on Higher Education in order to promote development of schools of applied studies and upgrade our educational system as a whole” said Verbić.

    The Secretary General of EURASHE, Johan Cloet, said that in contemporary society, changes are unexpected and constant, and that it is very important to bear in mind the issue of employment of the young. Therefore, new disciplines must be introduced and education must be adapted to the market needs.

    Marko Grdošić, project manager at EURASHE, presented the support of EURASHE to the development of professional higher education in Europe through the recommendations to the national legislation regarding the equation of qualifications of professional higher education in the region.

    Raimund Hudak, the representative of DHBW University from Stuttgart presented the system of dual education exercised in Germany and emphasised its importance, which attracted attention of certain schools of applied studies from Serbia which apply the dual system of education modelled on the German system.

    For the first time in the Republic of Serbia, the Conference of Academies of Applied Studies Serbia in cooperation with EURASHE and under the patronage of the Ministry of Education, has organised the seminar titled ‘Profiling Professional Higher Education’. This seminar is of crucial importance for professional higher education in Serbia, because it promotes cooperation with schools of applied studies and universities in the region. Regarding the fact that the system of higher education in former Yugoslav republics was the same and that all of them had prominent professions, experts and scientists in different fields, it is now the right moment to establish cooperation through participation in mutual projects and membership in international organisations. That cooperation can be seen in student and teacher exchange, i.e. mobility, formation of mutual curricula, visits and solving of mutual problems. This contributes to the fact that all higher education institutions have a dual system of education, which will enable the application of best practice not only to the present generations but also to the future ones.

    The goal of the seminar was the realisation of cooperation of higher education institutions in the region, representation of the systems of education of the countries participating in the seminar and mutual participation in European programmes of support to higher education. Using presentations, a large number of participants presented the system of education in the countries they come from and pointed out possibilities of cooperation of higher education institutions in the region. Professional higher education in Europe, regional cooperation and other issues dealing with improvement of this area of higher education were also discussed in the seminar.
