Title: European Conference on Higher Education Institutions as Local Actors
Organiser: Council of Europe (CoE), Anchor Institutions Task Force
Place: Paris (France)
Date: 16 Jun 2016
Summary: Why focus on higher education and local communities? While ambitions for world class institutions and research tend to dominate the European policy discourse, higher education institutions play important roles in their local communities. These range from preparing students for the local labor market through providing expertise for local and regional authorities as well as local businesses and civil society to furthering social cohesion by working with and for less advantaged groups in the community. The refugee crisis is one highly topical example of a situation that will test the role of higher education as local actors. Purpose of the conference The purposes of the conference will be:
- to bring together higher education leaders from all parts of Europe to examine the role of higher education institutions as local actors;
- to exchange experience and good practice;
- to explore the scope for a platform of European institutions and organizations committed to developing the mission of higher education in local communities.
