The University of Nicosia (UNIC) (www.unic.ac.cy) is the largest university in Cyprus, and the largest university in Southern Europe that teaches primarily in English, welcoming over 12,000 students from 70 countries across the globe. It is a comprehensive university with over 100 conventional on-campus and online programmes of study, and particular strengths in medicine, health sciences, blockchain, law, accounting, architecture, international relations, education, computer science, and engineering. UNIC’s recent focus is characterised by innovation in new technology and transnational programme delivery. An increasing number of programmes are offered in Distance Learning mode, utilizing state-of-the-art technology and pedagogical methods. More generally, UNIC has been investing in developing programmes, sometimes with partner universities, focusing on global careers; building research capabilities in areas relating to the 4th Industrial Revolution; and improving the student experience both on-campus and online. The University has been instrumental in the internationalisation of higher education in Cyprus and the wider region. It founded the first and largest medical school in Cyprus, in collaboration with St George’s, University of London. UNIC also offers a series of innovative joint degrees with some of the leading universities in Europe. In parallel, UNIC stands out for a number of global university firsts in its dynamic initiative in cryptocurrency and blockchain technology. Moreover, UNIC has been a pioneer in online education in the Mediterranean, supporting both its own degree programmes, as well as those of its joint degree partners throughout Europe. In this regard, UNIC was awarded a 5-Star QS rating for Online/Distance Learning, becoming the first university in the EU to be recognised in this way by the QS Intelligence Unit. The University’s global outlook and internationalization efforts have recently been recognized by QS World University Rankings 2019, with UNIC being ranked among the top 100 universities in the Emerging Europe and Central Asia (ERCA) Region.
