Dr. Karel Šima works in the Centre for Higher Education Studies, Prague as a senior researcher and consultant. He studied history and anthropology at Charles University, Prague where he also regularly teaches. He has been involved in project that developed new research evaluation system in Czech Republic until recently. His research interests comprise research funding and evaluation, ethnography of higher education, the idea of modern university and higher education and science policies in general. As an expert, he has participated in a number of international projects concerning these issues. He has co-authored three books and a number of articles on both Czech and European higher education policy. Recently he is involved in Czech-Norwegian comparative research project on relationship of universities to the peripheral regions (see PERIF http://www.perifproject.eu/.
